In general terms home dialysis can be peritoneal dialysis or home hemodialysis. In Bermuda, peritoneal dialysis is the only home dialysis modality offered.
What Is Peritoneal Dialysis?
Peritoneal dialysis is a type of dialysis that used the patient's peritoneum in the abdomen as a membrane or filter that helps to remove toxins and fluid. Sterile dialysis fluid is introduced into the abdominal cavity and by osmosis and diffusion dialysis takes place.
Two Types of Peritoneal Dialysis
CAPD (Continuous Ambulatory PD)
In CAPD manual bags are used and patient is filled and drained by gravity. On average, patients do four manual bags (exchanges) in 24 hours.
CCPD (Continuous Cycling PD) is a type of peritoneal dialysis where cycler machine is used for overnight treatments and all exchanges are performed by this device while patient is sleeping.
